Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A has come a long way since I first ate there in the late '80s. I remember one was tucked into the food court at the local mall I used to visit in Scottsdale, AZ. But that's about all I remember. It blended in with all of the other small restaurants.
Now Chick-fil-A has freestanding restaurants in over 38 states and are kicking ass. Every time I go to the one where I live now, it is packed. The drive-thru line is LONG. The line inside is worse. With all of those people, you would think it would take the "fast" out of Chick-fil-A's fast food. Absolutely not!
There were a few things I noticed on my last visit that makes a big difference in turning customers at this location. First off, they have a hell of a lot of great workers there. When paying for your food at the drive-thru window, it is not unusual to have one person taking your money and one person handing you your food. It's a great system. And by the time I grab mine, the next order is already at the window ready for the next customer.
I mentioned the long drive-thru lines. They actually have an associate directing traffic to make sure it goes smoothly. I've never seen that at any other fast food location.
I think my favorite part of my last visit was the other employee that was handing out menus to drivers in the drive-thru line so they could figure out their order before they got to the box. I mean, the line is long anyway, you might as well use the time to look at the menu instead of getting up to order and holding up the line even more.
All of this stuff together made for a great experience in a place where you wouldn't expect it. Chick-fil-A has come up with a great system and they will be quite successful if they continue to put this much thought into customer service.
