Crosswalk Etiquette

May 23rd 2007 20:22
It is accepted, at least by most “sane” drivers, that a pedestrian has the right of way when in a crosswalk. But, that does not mean the pedestrian can fuck off while walking across the street! There is a certain etiquette required when crossing a street. I guess I kind of made the following up, but anyone I talk to about it agrees.

I love being a kind motorist and stopping for people to cross the street, especially in a congested store parking lot or something similar. Most normal people will acknowledge the favor and do a little foot shuffle or a wave saying “Thank you for stopping.” That’s all I need. But if I stop for someone and they give an attitude like “Yeah, you better stop!” it makes me want to mash the gas! Or the classic “I’m gonna walk slower now and hold you up” bullshit.

Same goes for letting another driver merge into your lane. A little smile and a wave goes a long way. I don’t owe you a damn thing, so a little appreciation is great.

I could ramble on about this kind of stuff forever, and I’m even more animated in person. I should just start posting videos.

Maybe it’s just the area I live in. Does anyone else feel the same way I do?

I hear you about the wave and a smile when you let someone merge into your lane in the car.

I have the worst road rage (well not the worst. I'm not bad enough to get out of my car and physically attack another person) but I do scream and curse extremely loudly (usually accompanied by rude finger gestures)

But no matter what stupid thing a driver has done to make me feel the rage, a wave and a smile will calm me right down (just acknowledge that you were a dickhead and you're sorry.....and we're cool).

People who don't wave when I let them into my lane.......well they get yelled at. Tailgated even. And I'll definitely cut them off (okay that's an exaggeration.....I'm not really that bad........at least I don't think so).

If a car is approaching as I am stepping into the crosswalk or right-of-way in a parking lot, etc., I always wave the driver on before I step out, as it takes the car a heck of a lot less time to pass than it does for the me to walk by. I don't unerstand why pedestrians can't grasp this concept. Yes, a person has the right-of-way, because a car could kill you, but why don't people have enough common sense to let the car go by first and then step out or walk around behind the car as it passes?

Wait till they're right in front of your car, then honk the horn. That usually gets 'em moving.

I have seriously considered installing a cowcatcher on my front bumper.

As for the rude bastards that don't acknowledge road courtesy, I'm real good at maneuvering them into a box with another car, then being cheerfully oblivious when they try to get my attention.

I also love the women (and I hate to generalize here, but it's always the women who do this with me) who sail right past as though I were a doorman when I hold doors open for them. I usually say loudly, "OH, DON"T MENTION IT. MY PLEASURE."

-But then again I live within an hours' drive of one of the all-around rudest populaces in the world. This city has held the number one slot for worst drivers in America for several years now. Care to guess what city?

And what city do you live in (or near)?

I'm in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area of Virginia, about 3hrs from D.C. I think the overall poor driving comes from all the different military members in the area, which of course come from all different parts of the country. All their driving habits are different and clash when together.

Same goes for courtesy. Each part of the country has a different take on courtesy and the normal "what you should do" in a public situation.

I dunno about that, Nathan--aren't driving tests, road signs and laws standardized in the U.S.? I think the idea behind that was to promote similar behavior patterns in driving in the U.S. Back to the drawing board, I suppose!

Courtesy is unknown in Miami, which is an hour north of me. I've driven all over the U.S., Mexico, and parts of Asia and the Caribbean and I can safely say that, Yes--Miami, Florida has the absolute worst drivers in the U.S. , perhaps the world.
