High Gas Prices? Don’t Do This

I made a real dumb ass mistake on my trip to North Carolina a couple weeks ago. It’s even more embarrassing because I’ve thought about this happening before and always figured it wouldn’t happen to me.
I pulled off I-95 about 50 miles outside of Fayetteville to fill up the gas tank. I found the crappiest gas station I could, not on purpose, but it usually just happens that way when I am not familiar with the area. At least this one had pay-at-the-pump. I hate when I have to go inside and pay. I guess it didn’t matter this time because I was thirsty and needed to run in anyway. That is where the problem started.
I try to multitask as much as I can, so naturally I started pumping my gas and clicked the little “automatic keep pumping gas for me while I go inside lever” on the nozzle. I later found out that it is called a "hold open latch." I headed in to the shop to get a drink and use the bathroom. It was upon me leaving the bathroom that I heard the “bad” sound. It sounded like someone taking a shower. Now, what would sound like someone taking a shower in a gas station?
“Nah, it couldn’t be that!” I thought to myself as I was walking through the store. “Someone must be cleaning something.” As I got closer to the door, the sound got louder, and much more distinct.
“OH SHIT!” I ran outside to my car once I was sure what was happening. The damn automatic shutoff didn’t kick in on the nozzle and $3.23 per gallon gas was shooting out of the gas tank, all over the side of my car, and was making quite an expensive puddle on the ground. Thankfully no one else noticed how stupid I was. I wish I would have got a picture of it, but I probably would have looked like an even bigger moron. I shut off the gas at the nozzle and all was good again, but I learned an expensive lesson.
I sure won’t leave my car again while gas is hopefully going into it, at least not with gas prices this high.

That's why they have those signs that read "Do not leave pump unattended".
Got to admit, though, that would have made a great photo..
